This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie is Blueberry Crumb Cake and was chosen by Sihan of Beffudlement.

There is not too much to say about this cake except that it was super simple to make and downright delicious. I really enjoyed baking this cake because this is the type of baking that is comfortable and relaxing for me. It is stress relief baking at its finest.

Follow up:

The aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg filled my kitchen even before I put this in the oven and it came out looking and smelling unbelievable. My cake baked for 1 hour in a glass Pyrex dish and I was worried about over browning, so about 15 minutes before it was done I covered it loosely with foil.

I think this is the quintessential simple coffee cake. The blueberries were sweet and moist and the topping was nutty and buttery. This cake is a really great base for playing with different flavors. You can really pick your poison as far as fruit goes and then pair it with the best accompanying citrus zest. I also think this cake would be great with some coconut mixed into the batter. I would also like to try making a layer of the topping inside the cake.

To serve, we drizzled a lemon glaze over the top of a few slices (good idea, honey;)), which added a nice sweetness to the buttery cake and topping.

This got 2 thumbs up from Nick and I, as well as from co-workers in both our offices.

Sara - What can I do to convince you to make this for me? Crumb cake is one of my favorite sweets.

That crumb cake looks so amazingly good with all of the blueberries scattered through it. I love the addition of the lemon glaze on top too, what a stellar idea.

It was one of them smell good baked goods. I'll have to make this again with all kind of different things.

Wow, the glaze looks fabulous!

And I think you are right, a layer of the topping inside the cake would be great.

This looks delicious! I love stress relief baking. Did you use fresh or frozen blueberries? So often frozen berries are just as good as the fresh grocery store stuff.

AJM,

Sara used fresh bluebs. on this job. We only bought them because we got to taste them at the store and were surprised with how great they were, given the time of year and our location. WF's has done us dirty many times (damn you brown, organic garlic!) but they really came through on this one. I agree though, if you are unsure frozen is definitely the best bet, they are like canned tomatoes: uniform in nature and *mostly* as good as fresh.

Usually I stray away from coffeecakes, because they tend to be dry, but this one looks really moist. Moist enough that I think I need to try it out. All in the name of research, of course. :)

The lemon glaze would be just perfect. It absolutely makes that first pic perfect - oh, and the cake too.
